Patterns in Wood

As an alternative to plywood paneling, we recently designed a series of 3D wood patterns for two of our commercial clients, Pagliacci Pizza and Caffe Umbria.

The patterns range from individual wood blocks laid out in a herringbone pattern to shifting geometric pyramids and cupped circles cut by a 3 axis CNC router.

Each block of the herringbone pattern was cut, shaped and laid up by hand to create a 3D wave effect. The pyramidal pattern was designed in Rhino and cut by Dynamic Shapes, a local CNC routing company here in Seattle.  We skewed geometries and varied the depths to create an undulating pattern to the wood.

We love how the natural features of the wood - the checking, knots and grain - add to the pattern.
