Laser Cut Wood Panels

walnut laser cut panels

This series of mock-ups of “Il Grifo,” the griffen symbol of Perugia, Italy and artisan roaster Caffe Umbria, explored the use of engraved wood as signage. Starting with a vector image that we fine tuned and scaled in AutoCad, we then worked with local CNC laser shop, Dynamic Shapes, to find the right combination of relief against the walnut panel. The laser burnishes the wood creating the appearance of a black line, so by varying the width of the cut, we were able to manipulate the heaviness of the lineweight to get the look we were going for.
