A restaurant has anchored this spot across from the busy Ballard Locks since 1939.

The structure was originally built as a heavy timber replica of a six beam Haida house. Consulting with our friends at Headwater People to better understand the building and its history, we preserved the structure’s original logs, which are on display above the kitchen, and carvings made by Jimmy John, a Northwest Coast artist, which stand in the native teaching garden outside.

The building’s new timber structure complements the old with the addition following the lines of the original Haida house form. The building exterior is clad with cedar siding and shingles - a nod to the sawmills and boatbuilding industries that developed along Ballard’s shores, earning Ballard the nickname “Shingle Town USA.”

Inside the built-ins, furnishings and lighting were designed, detailed and selected to showcase the artisan craftsmanship that made them.
