This 1950s home embodies the clean lines, low-slung roof, deep overhangs, and exposed structure characteristic of mid-century modern design. Despite several interior updates over the years, the exterior retained much of its original character.

Our clients—a family of four—needed more space while preserving the home’s MCM identity. Because the house is part of a larger neighborhood composition, maintaining the original gable roofline from the street was essential. To accommodate a new L-shaped addition at the rear, we transformed the back half of the gable into a single-slope shed roof and nested the new addition just beneath it. The result is seamless: from the street, the original roofline remains unchanged; from the backyard, the addition echoes the updated slope of the main roof.

The addition draws directly from the home’s original language—wide overhangs, exposed beams, roof cutouts, and a palette of cedar and stone. A carefully placed roof opening separates a new primary bedroom deck from a floor-to-ceiling shower window, allowing light and rain to reach a planter below. This element supports plant growth while creating a natural buffer between spaces.

An exposed beam extends from the main house to form a trellised edge along the outdoor dining patio, while stone landscape walls project outward to shield views into the primary suite. Inside, the primary bedroom is wrapped in windows overlooking the surrounding planter and garden beyond.

Together, these elements reinforce a continuous relationship between indoors and out, extending the home’s original architectural intent while accommodating contemporary living.

Our client approached us with a challenge: add to their mid-century home but preserve the low-lying horizontal vibe they loved. To prove the concept, we put together a study of three forms and how they’d marry to the existing home.
Hint: They choose the middle option shown here.
