Overlooking Puget Sound with the Olympic Mountains beyond, this home was designed for a family of four on a rare unimproved northwest lot.

Freed from the constraints of existing structures, the three-story house runs parallel to the shoreline, stepping with the natural slope to engage expansive views, mature trees, and a meandering stream to the south. The presence of water is constant—visible from nearly every room and anchoring the home’s spatial experience.

Arrival is sequenced through a stepped paver path and east-facing shade garden, with filtered views of the Sound emerging between plantings and a wood privacy screen. The sequence resolves at a custom copper-clad front door, where the first unobstructed view of the water is revealed.

Inside, an elevated circulation spine organizes the main level, linking the central stair, guest suite wing, kitchen, and garage. A subtle step down transitions into the primary living spaces, where sunken living and dining rooms are divided by a double-sided fireplace. These rooms are framed by a floating wood-and-glass stair to the north and the kitchen to the south. Along the west elevation, floor-to-ceiling glazing and folding doors open the interior to a series of stepped terraces, extending daily life outward toward the view.

Upstairs, all bedrooms are oriented west toward the Sound, while frosted glazing and clerestory windows maintain privacy from the street and uphill neighbors. The primary suite integrates built-in cabinetry and a custom live-edge maple and steel bed, reinforcing the home’s crafted, material-driven character.

“THE RESULT, EXPERTLY EXECUTED by Ainslie-Davis Construction, is a quietly dramatic, three-level collaboration of transparency and connection, in three parts: a big, roomy garage; an enclosed breezeway that connects it to the home; and the home itself, which cranks off-axis to align with the site slope and shoreline.”

We wanted the house to be an expression of us - something unique. For us, it’s making a dream come true. We wanted something in the end that expressed our personalities and we had a part of. A lot is invested for us with the “We wanted the house to be an expression of us - something unique. For us, it’s making a dream come true.
